Medical society official faces indecency charge MECUM Saturday, August 23, 2008 BY DAVID WENNER AND MATTHEW KEMENY Of The Patriot-News
Derry Twp. police have accused a top Pennsylvania Medical Society executive of exposing himself in a public rest room at Hersheypark.
Roger F. Mecum, 65, of the 100 block of Dogwood Drive, Hershey, has been on personal leave since his July 31 arrest, the society's spokesman Chuck Moran said Friday.
Mecum is charged with indecent exposure and open lewdness, both misdemeanors, and disorderly conduct, a summary offense.
"Anyone who knows Roger Mecum knows the charges are the product of an overactive imagination," said Mecum's attorney, Matthew Gover. Mecum intends to fight the charges, he said.
Derry Twp. police declined to elaborate on the alleged incident, which occurred about 3:40 p.m., police reports state.
The Pennsylvania Medical Society is the trade association of state doctors and lobbies on their behalf.
Mecum, who has been the society's executive vice president since the late 1980s, is essentially the organization's CEO and is in charge of its daily operations, Moran said.
Mecum in recent years has played prominent roles in efforts such as a push for limits on lawsuits against doctors.
